How to Find Your Interior Design Style when Registering for Your Wedding

Building the perfect wedding registry is for many brides either their greatest excitment or biggest source of dread. The idea of registering for whatever you want at face value sounds like a dream. This is oftentimes until you become overwhelmed with options. When it comes to finding ones design style, a person is also often encouraged to simply experiment with their purchases until they begin curating what they have found to really love. However, that is not the most practical approach when building a wedding registry. Whether you are a younger bride who has yet to build a home, or just have yet to nail down your own interior taste, here are some things to consider when discovering your design style as you register for your wedding.

Broadly speaking, it’s good to start with identifying what you already love. In your own home, in others’ homes, in stores you love to shop, and online. Is there an item in your own home that you would never part with? Is there something of your parents or another relative that you just wish they would pass on to you? Is there something of a friend that you wish you could have in your own space? Is there something in a shop you love that you would buy in a heartbeat if you were outfitting your dream home? These are the questions to start asking yourself.

Now that you have taken notice of some pieces that you know and love, look to see if there are any consistencies or patterns. This is how you begin to pinpoint what you drift towards--such as if you are a minimalist, neutral-lover or a maximalist, color-enthusaist. Are all the dishes you have saved in Pinterest blue and white and very traditional? Are all the couches you have saved a fun pop of the same shade of green? Are all the coffee tables saved to wishlists online glass with iron accents? You are likely finding more patterns than you expected.

Now that you have begun to notice some patterns, start finding what adjectives can be used to summarize your taste. You are drawn towards “warm, timeless, and inviting”, or “modern, sleek, and structured”, or “soft, romantic, and feminine”, for example. Once you have found your adjectives, you can use those as a rule of thumb as you browse and curate your registry. This is particularly helpful in looking beyond trends in interiors and helping you evaluate what you will like long-term.

Now that you have defined your style, remember the importance of mixing adjacent styles helps give a layered and complex feel that does not feel as one-dimensional. Always be willing to experiment! If you love traditional style with warm wood tones and blue and white toile, consider throwing in a piece or two of something really modern from Montes Doggett, for example. And if you ever get stuck and need some ideas, our retail team is always available for brainstorming or answering any questions!
